SXSW announces digital series contest
South by Southwest (SXSW) has teamed up with ON Networks to sponsor an online series contest in hopes of discovering the next big episodic digital series. Read more about it here.
These sort of contests are going to start popping up everywhere. With an emmy category already in place for broadband series, Internet series are starting to get street cred. But it may be a while before any series makes a reasonable sum of money (e.g., Prom Queen was not profitable).
The majority of Internet content producers are really low-budget independent filmmakers who have discovered a new, more accessible, distribution channel through the web. And most of these filmmakers are looking for exposure, not so much money. So if they can get a deal that will help get viewership, they’ll likely take it. Even if it’s for peanuts.
