Online video stealing TV viewers?

November 16, 2007

New York Times article pumping up online video and theorizing that online video is the cause of lower TV viewership this fall. Pretty basic stuff here, but decent reading for those who aren’t aware of the category.

I personally don’t think TV viewership has fallen because of online video. I don’t have numbers to back this, but it seems like there are a ton of new shows on the air, and now a days, it’s becoming more difficult to convince someone to try something new with so many other forms of entertainment out there (e..g, video games, Internet). Also, I’m not sure the quality of the TV fall season is there. Heroes hasn’t been terribly interesting this season, and Lost and 24 didn’t air in the fall. So who knows how much of this is driven by online video versus bad TV programming versus other media. I do think online video is a growing category, but not sure we can claim it’s stealing mainstream TV viewers yet. They’re not perfect substitutes yet in any regard.
