NBC.com producing original content
Lost Remote is reporting that NBC.com is premiering two original shows in the coming month. The first one is ”Coastal Dreams“, a soap opera following two twenty-something girls who travel to Pacific Shores for the summer. The second series is emmy-nominated “Pale Force“, which is an animated comedy. You can read about it here.
Interesting note is that ‘Coastal Dreams” will have a lot of interactive elements, including viewers receiving text messages, phone calls, and emails from characters. I’ll give them points for bringing interactivity into the game. What would make it truly interactive is if the viewers could somehow impact plot or character decisions (a la “Its All In Your Hands“).
I wonder if there’s been market research that shows that online viewers crave soap opera series. They seem to pop up a lot. It’s probably more of a function of NBC.com following what’s been successful already (e.g., ”Sam Has 7 Friends“, “Prom Queen“) . Like in Hollywood, studios tend to stick with what has worked in the past, or trends they see in the marketplace.
